Assessment of the safety of high-dose, short-term supplementation with vitamin E in healthy older adults.
Am.J.Clin.Nutr. 60, No. 5, 704-09, 1994
Short-term supplementation daily with 800 mg dl-alpha-tocopheryl acetate (VE) for 30 d increased plasma alpha-tocopherol and Zn2+ levels, and decreased plasma lipid peroxides in a double-blind, placebo-controlled study involving 32 healthy, elderly, subjects. VE had no adverse-effects on hepatic or renal function, intermediary metabolism, hematological status, plasma vitamins, serum trace elements or antioxidant status of the subjects. *Short-term supplementation with 800 mg vitamin E/d has no adverse effect on healthy older adults. The amount of vitamin E supplementation used in this study has previously been reported to enhance the immune response and decrease plasma lipid peroxide concentrations.
